Understanding Anti-Aging and Aesthetics

"Anti-aging" regenerative medicine really covers two different things, and separating them helps you spend wisely. The first is aesthetic treatment - skin quality, fine lines, volume, scarring, and hair thinning - where regenerative techniques have real, proven uses. The second is systemic "longevity" medicine - IV drips and infusions marketed as slowing aging itself - where the evidence is far weaker and the marketing far louder.

How Regenerative Medicine Can Help

On the aesthetic side, several regenerative treatments genuinely deliver:
  • PRP for hair loss is the best-supported use here: multiple randomized trials and meta-analyses show platelet-rich plasma increases hair density for many patients with pattern (androgenetic) hair loss, especially alongside proven therapies like minoxidil.
  • PRP with microneedling ("vampire facial") shows real, if modest, improvements in skin texture, tone, and acne scarring.
  • Fat transfer and nanofat use your own fat for volume and skin quality and are well established in plastic surgery.

What Realistic Success Looks Like

Honest and encouraging: for hair restoration and skin rejuvenation, many patients see meaningful results, and PRP hair treatment in particular has solid supporting evidence - with the understanding that it usually requires a series of sessions plus maintenance, and works best combined with proven treatments. By contrast, systemic "anti-aging" products - stem cell IVs, exosome infusions, NAD+ drips - have no convincing human evidence of slowing aging, and these are exactly the products the FDA has warned can carry serious risks. The smart move: embrace the proven aesthetic uses, and be skeptical of anything sold as a longevity cure.

Typical Costs

PRP facial treatments typically run $600-$1,500 per session; PRP hair restoration $1,500-$3,500 for an initial series, plus maintenance; nanofat and surgical fat transfer vary by provider. Longevity IV programs range from hundreds per drip to five-figure memberships - scrutinize these hardest, since the evidence is thinnest where prices are highest.

Recovery and Risks

Aesthetic PRP involves redness, swelling, or bruising for a few days; because your own blood is used, allergic risk is low and infection is uncommon with good technique. Injected or IV products made from donor tissue (exosomes, birth-tissue "stem cells") carry meaningfully higher risks and are not FDA-approved for these uses.

Choosing a Provider Who Does It Well

For injectable and surgical aesthetic work, credentials matter - look for board certification in dermatology or plastic surgery, realistic before/after expectations, and clear per-session pricing. Be cautious with any provider selling stem cell IVs as anti-aging medicine or pressuring you with expiring "membership" rates - the U.S. FDA has specifically warned consumers about unapproved stem cell and exosome products.

Questions to Ask a Provider

What result can I realistically expect, and when? How many sessions before we judge it worked? Who performs the procedure and what are their credentials? What happens - and what do I owe - if there is no visible improvement?

Frequently Asked Questions

Does PRP really help hair loss?

Yes - for pattern hair loss, trials support real density improvement for many patients. It works best combined with proven therapies and requires maintenance sessions.

Are "stem cell facials" worth it?

Most topical "stem cell" skincare contains no living cells. PRP with microneedling has better (though modest) evidence for skin texture and is the more legitimate option.

Can any treatment actually slow aging?

No injectable or IV product has been shown to slow human aging. The interventions with real longevity evidence remain the basics: exercise, sleep, diet, and blood pressure control.

Is this covered by insurance?

No - aesthetic and longevity treatments are self-pay essentially everywhere.
