Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiovascular Disease

This guide is educational and is being prepared for medical review. It is not medical advice.

Cardiovascular disease covers conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels, including coronary artery disease and the damage that follows a heart attack. Cell and regenerative therapies for the heart have been studied for two decades, so there is a real evidence base to look at — and a realistic view of what it shows.

What genuinely helps today

Modern cardiology is one of medicine’s great success stories. Proven medications, procedures such as stenting and bypass, cardiac rehabilitation, and lifestyle changes (not smoking, activity, blood pressure and cholesterol control) prevent events and extend life. These interventions have decades of strong evidence behind them and should be the foundation of any plan.

Where regenerative medicine actually stands

Stem cell and cell-based therapies to repair heart tissue have been tested in many clinical trials since the early 2000s. The honest summary: results have generally been modest and inconsistent, and no stem cell therapy is FDA-approved to regenerate heart muscle. Research continues into newer cell types and approaches, and it remains a legitimate scientific pursuit — but the marketing at some clinics runs well ahead of the data.

To follow credible research, search registered trials at ClinicalTrials.gov.

Protecting yourself

The FDA has warned about clinics selling unapproved stem cell products. Be cautious of “stem cell” heart treatments sold out-of-pocket, especially abroad. Read: FDA Consumer Alert on Regenerative Medicine.

Questions to Ask a Provider

  • What is my specific diagnosis, and what standard treatments should I consider first?
  • What independent evidence supports this treatment for my condition?
  • Is the exact product and use FDA-approved or part of an authorized clinical trial?
  • What are the realistic benefits, risks, alternatives, and signs that I should seek other care?
  • What are the total cost, follow-up plan, and stopping rule if treatment does not help?
