Chronic pain is a complex experience that may affect sleep, mobility, mood, work, and quality of life. Useful care begins with a specific diagnosis where possible and often combines physical rehabilitation, medication, behavioral strategies, procedures, and treatment of contributing medical conditions.

Where Regenerative Medicine May Fit

Regenerative procedures may be relevant when pain can be linked to a defined musculoskeletal structure, such as an arthritic joint or chronic tendon injury. They are less useful as a single explanation or treatment for widespread pain without a clear target. Evidence should be matched to the diagnosis, not simply to the word ‘pain.’

Look for a clinician who explains the likely pain generators and builds a coordinated plan rather than promising one procedure for every form of chronic pain. Improvement should be measured through function, activity, sleep, and medication use as well as pain scores.

• What diagnosis or tissue is responsible for my chronic pain symptoms?
• Which treatment are you recommending, and what evidence supports it for my diagnosis?
• Who will perform the procedure, and will imaging or other guidance be used when appropriate?
• What benefits, limitations, alternatives, recovery plan, follow-up, and total costs should I expect?
