Hip Pain

Understanding Hip Pain

Hip pain can be caused by osteoarthritis, tendon or muscle injury, bursitis, labral problems, bone injury, or pain referred from the spine. Examination and appropriate imaging help determine whether the problem is inside the joint or in the surrounding tissues.

Where Regenerative Medicine May Fit

PRP and bone-marrow-derived preparations are offered for selected hip-joint and tendon conditions. Evidence is more limited and technically variable than it is for knee osteoarthritis, and deeper targets generally require image guidance. These procedures cannot correct every structural cause of hip pain.

Planning Your Next Step

Ask which structure is causing the symptoms, whether the injection will be guided by ultrasound or fluoroscopy, and how rehabilitation will be coordinated. A complete discussion should include established nonsurgical care and when surgical consultation may be useful.

Questions to Ask a Provider

  • What diagnosis or tissue is responsible for my hip pain symptoms?
  • Which treatment are you recommending, and what evidence supports it for my diagnosis?
  • Who will perform the procedure, and will imaging or other guidance be used when appropriate?
  • What benefits, limitations, alternatives, recovery plan, follow-up, and total costs should I expect?
