Joint Pain

Understanding Joint Pain

Joint pain is a symptom rather than a single condition. Useful evaluation considers which joint is involved, how symptoms began, whether swelling or instability is present, and whether the cause is mechanical, inflammatory, or systemic.

Where Regenerative Medicine May Fit

PRP, prolotherapy, and bone-marrow-derived preparations may be considered for selected osteoarthritis, tendon, or ligament problems. Evidence differs considerably by joint and diagnosis, so results from one body area should not automatically be applied to another.

Planning Your Next Step

Choose a clinician who identifies the pain source and explains the full range of reasonable options. Ask which evidence applies to the exact joint and diagnosis, how the procedure is prepared and guided, and what rehabilitation and follow-up will be used.

Questions to Ask a Provider

  • What diagnosis or tissue is responsible for my joint pain symptoms?
  • Which treatment are you recommending, and what evidence supports it for my diagnosis?
  • Who will perform the procedure, and will imaging or other guidance be used when appropriate?
  • What benefits, limitations, alternatives, recovery plan, follow-up, and total costs should I expect?
