Knee Pain

Understanding Knee Pain

Knee pain is commonly related to osteoarthritis, meniscus or ligament injury, tendon problems, patellofemoral pain, or trauma. Evaluation should connect symptoms and function with examination and imaging rather than assuming that every painful knee has the same problem.

Where Regenerative Medicine May Fit

PRP has supportive evidence for symptom improvement in some patients with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis, although preparations and results vary. Bone marrow concentrate is also being studied and may help selected patients, but comparative evidence and protocols remain less settled. Neither treatment should be described as reliably regrowing normal cartilage.

Planning Your Next Step

Ask about the diagnosis and arthritis grade, the exact product and preparation, use of image guidance, realistic goals, and the rehabilitation plan. Compare injections with exercise therapy, weight management when relevant, medication, bracing, and surgical options based on the condition and patient goals.

Questions to Ask a Provider

  • What diagnosis or tissue is responsible for my knee pain symptoms?
  • Which treatment are you recommending, and what evidence supports it for my diagnosis?
  • Who will perform the procedure, and will imaging or other guidance be used when appropriate?
  • What benefits, limitations, alternatives, recovery plan, follow-up, and total costs should I expect?
