Neuropathy

This guide is educational and is being prepared for medical review. It is not medical advice.

Peripheral neuropathy — nerve damage often causing pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness — has many causes, with diabetes among the most common. Regenerative approaches are being explored, and it helps to weigh them honestly against well-established care.

What genuinely helps today

The most effective step is treating the underlying cause — for example, tight glucose control in diabetic neuropathy, correcting vitamin deficiencies, or addressing other contributors. Proven symptom treatments include specific medications for nerve pain, physical therapy, foot care to prevent complications, and support for balance and function. Getting the root cause managed is where the strongest evidence lies.

Where regenerative medicine actually stands

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell approaches for peripheral neuropathy are being studied, and some small early studies report improvements. However, the overall evidence is limited and preliminary, and no such therapy is FDA-approved to treat neuropathy. These options may be worth discussing, but they should be presented as investigational — not as an established cure.

To follow legitimate research, search registered studies at ClinicalTrials.gov.

Protecting yourself

The FDA has warned about clinics selling unapproved stem cell products. Be cautious of large cash-pay “stem cell” or “regenerative” neuropathy programs that promise reversal of nerve damage. Read: FDA Consumer Alert on Regenerative Medicine.

Questions to Ask a Provider

  • What is my specific diagnosis, and what standard treatments should I consider first?
  • What independent evidence supports this treatment for my condition?
  • Is the exact product and use FDA-approved or part of an authorized clinical trial?
  • What are the realistic benefits, risks, alternatives, and signs that I should seek other care?
  • What are the total cost, follow-up plan, and stopping rule if treatment does not help?
