Peripheral neuropathy can result from diabetes, vitamin deficiency, medication, immune disease, compression, infection, inherited conditions, and other causes. Identifying the cause is important because some contributors are treatable and some symptoms reflect focal nerve compression rather than generalized neuropathy.
Cell-based, growth-factor, and other regenerative approaches are being studied for nerve repair, but routine benefit has not been established across the many types of neuropathy. Procedures aimed at a joint or soft tissue may help a local pain source without treating the underlying nerve disorder.
A neurologic or neuromuscular evaluation can define the pattern and cause and establish objective measures such as strength, sensation, walking, or nerve testing. Emerging therapies should be assessed for the exact neuropathy type and offered with continued management of the underlying condition.
