Where Regenerative Medicine May Fit

The evidence and regulatory status of an emerging therapy depend on the exact disease, product, route, and treatment goal. Research for one condition cannot be generalized to unrelated conditions, and a provider’s broad interest in regenerative medicine is not evidence for every use.

Patients should first confirm the diagnosis and identify the medical specialty that normally manages it. Ask for condition-specific evidence, the exact product and protocol, regulatory status, expected outcomes, and appropriate alternatives.

• What diagnosis or tissue is responsible for my other conditions symptoms?
• Which treatment are you recommending, and what evidence supports it for my diagnosis?
• Who will perform the procedure, and will imaging or other guidance be used when appropriate?
• What benefits, limitations, alternatives, recovery plan, follow-up, and total costs should I expect?
