Understanding Tendon and Ligament Injuries

Tendons connect muscle to bone and ligaments connect bone to bone; both heal slowly because they have limited blood supply. Common problems include tendinopathy (tennis elbow, Achilles, patellar), partial tears, and chronic ligament sprains. This slow-healing nature is exactly why regenerative injections became popular for these injuries.

How Regenerative Medicine Can Help

For many tendon and ligament problems, regenerative treatment genuinely helps - sometimes where rest, bracing, and cortisone have failed. PRP has the strongest evidence for chronic tennis elbow, where trials show better long-term relief than steroid injection, and it is used for other tendinopathies too. Prolotherapy is used for ligament laxity, and needle tenotomy with PRP can restart healing in stubborn, degenerated tendon.

What Realistic Success Looks Like

Honest and encouraging: results depend on the specific injury. Chronic tennis elbow and several tendinopathies respond well, and many people return to activity - especially when the injection is paired with a proper loading-rehab program. Some injuries (certain Achilles and hamstring cases) show more mixed results, so an experienced provider will tell you candidly how good a candidate you are. Full (complete) tears usually need surgical evaluation.

Typical Costs

Usually not covered by insurance. PRP typically $500-$2,500 per treatment; a short series is common for tendinopathy. Get the full protocol and rehab plan cost in writing.

Choosing a Provider Who Does It Well

Look for a provider who confirms whether you have tendinopathy, a partial tear, or a full tear, selects the PRP preparation deliberately, and pairs the injection with structured rehab. Be cautious with clinics that promise fixed return-to-play dates or market unapproved products as FDA-approved - the FDA has warned consumers about unapproved stem cell and exosome products.

Questions to Ask a Provider

Is my problem tendinopathy, a partial tear, or a full tear - and how does that change the plan? Which PRP preparation and why? What rehab is involved, and when will we judge success?
