Some of the most encouraging regenerative-medicine outcomes are not about athletics or anti-aging. They are about helping a difficult wound close and allowing a patient to move forward safely.
Autologous PRP gel is showing promise as an addition to standard care for diabetic foot ulcers.
What the evidence found
A 2024 meta-analysis combined 11 randomized trials with 828 patients. The analysis found a substantially higher rate of complete ulcer healing in patients treated with autologous PRP-based growth factors compared with conventional treatment alone.
Another 2024 review focused on older adults and also reported encouraging healing results. Because the PRP is prepared from the patient’s own blood and applied locally, it provides a concentrated mixture of platelets and signaling proteins at the wound.
Why this matters
Diabetic foot wounds can be slow to heal and may lead to infection, hospitalization, or amputation. Faster or more complete healing can mean fewer dressing changes, less time off the foot, and a safer return to daily activity.
PRP is an addition, not a replacement
Successful wound care still depends on controlling infection, improving blood flow, managing glucose, relieving pressure from the foot, removing unhealthy tissue when needed, and attending regular follow-up. PRP cannot overcome untreated poor circulation or deep infection.
The encouraging bottom line
This is a strong example of regenerative medicine addressing a serious, practical problem. The evidence does not justify treating every wound the same way, but it does suggest that autologous PRP can improve healing when added to comprehensive diabetic-foot care.
